Unconquerable Not Anymore: The Reasons India's Test Cricket Standing Is in Tatters

India's unexpected 0-2 loss to South Africa in the just finished Test series has left the team reeling.

Earlier this week, the visiting team handed India their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, contrary to predictions. This represented the Proteas' maiden series victory in India in 25 years and India's second home series loss in just a year after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The momentum established in the previous half-year has all but vanished and the careers of a number of cricketers - as well as head coach Gautam Gambhir - are now uncertain.

Initial Hope Vanishes

The young team's strong showing in the UK this season, under a fresh leadership, suggested a successful handover following the near-simultaneous exits of key players R Ashwin, Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

An easy 2-0 victory over West Indies at the start of the home season strengthened that view, until the Proteas turned up and handed out a crushing loss.

India were a tad unfortunate that skipper Gill suffered an injury early on in the opening Test and was ruled out in the contest. However, that fails to account for the squad of the terribly sub-par showing in each match against the opposition.

A number of star cricketers suffered, and several players hoping for long red-ball careers were exposed as not up to the mark - in skill or mindset - for the format.

Worrying Trend

It was the second series sweep at home suffered by India in just a year. In 2024, underestimated New Zealand had achieved a surprising 3-0 triumph which practically cost India a place in the Test championship finale.

The latest loss to South Africa threatens to derail the team's prospects of making the showpiece of this season as well.

Previously ranked third in the Test championship standings before the series, India have fallen to fifth place. Although nine more Tests are yet to be played, half of these are against the Aussies. Typically, competing on home turf would be a significant benefit - even against the strong Australian side. Yet the debacles against the Kiwis and the Proteas offer no room for that confidence.

Causes of the Fall

The national team's vulnerability in the longer format has been clearly revealed. However, the reason the team have struggled so much in Test matches on home soil in recent times is still bewildering.

From the year 2000 onwards, the Indian cricket team were seen as unbeatable in Test cricket in home conditions. Under sweltering weather and on pitches that assisted spinners and suited their batsmen and bowlers, the hosts dominated all comers. The occasional loss, like in 2012-13 against England, was viewed as an exception.

Today, the team appear to be vulnerable at home.

Versus the Kiwis in last year and the Proteas currently, India were beaten at their own game. The pitches they developed to favor their game failed miserably, as opponents capitalized on them more skillfully, surpassing the Indian batters and bowlers when it mattered most.

What's Gone Wrong?

A few experts argue that India is floundering in home conditions because home surfaces have been modified from turners to fast tracks to prepare players to succeed overseas.

Some point out that the IPL, in which many overseas players play, has reduced the unfamiliarity and challenge subcontinental pitches would present to them in the past.

Although there is some truth in each argument, it fails to account for why the team's showings on home soil have witnessed such a dramatic drop.

Multiple Failings

The majority of ex-cricketers diagnose a multi-faceted challenge, not just one or two factors.

Experts and participants have highlighted multiple deficiencies following the team's embarrassing defeat to the South Africans: underrating the rivals, lack of preparation, questionable picks, arrogance, constant chopping and changing of the starting eleven, and emphasizing limited-overs over red-ball cricket.

This was evident in the performances of the squad.

Cricketers such as Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom high hopes were held, suffered for their nonchalance, while Sai Sudarshan, Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel - who were looking to cement their place in the team - came up short in ability and attitude, paying a heavy price for their lackadaisical method.

A small number - Jadeja, Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Siraj and Sundar - fulfilled their talent and reputation - but not sufficiently to secure victories.

Management Questions

The analysis targeted not only the cricketers - the selection panel and support staff were also criticized, fuelled by disappointed supporters and critical former players. Under focus of the examination was head coach Gautam Gambhir.
