One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
