A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
