Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
