Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
